While looking at images of different interiors, I couldn’t help but notice five distinct sofa trends for 2018, each one with a particular appeal to me. A common denominator among these sofas is the soft upholstery that accentuates comfort in an understated way. But I think their retro shapes, the key feature of these trends is bubbling to a new climax. The actual shape that portrays a design clarity and most definitely defines them is finally on the rise again. Their shape and choice of materials delivers a quality of chic timeliness, that makes them so seductive. Bolder, rich shades against neutral grey tones are enhancing this luscious aesthetic, while creating strong contrasts and unmistakably impressive design statements. Hence, this post is dedicated to these inspiring sofa trends.

Some of these sofa trends were seen at the Salone del Mobile in Milan or having been bubbling on the back burner for some time. The first trend I spotted is the daybed sofa. It is a classic piece and its revival can add some real Danish charm. A low linear daybed can even introduce a Japandi flair to an interior if styled appropriately, while a curvy one has more of a French vibe to it. The next trend is about exposed wooden frame sofas. Sofas like this highlight the Scandinavian furniture design philosophy – simplicity, minimalism and functionality. The difference in this approach is a softness due to either the curvy shapes used or the plump paddings and pillows. This brings me to the third huge trend where low, curved, puffy and plump shapes are a sight for sore eyes. Need I say more? No, except that I’m crushing over these curvy shapes as you can tell.
Now, texture is a keyword that keeps popping in almost every design related post ever written online this last year. Furniture designers have really nailed this one by reviving the historic Chesterfield quilted sofa in velvet rather than the traditional leather. But to be fair, quilting has been applied in many other types of sofas in an effort to add that wanted texture attribute. Needless to say that velvet continues its trending streak as it adds on unbeatable lavish quality.
Finally, my least favorite sofa trend is the high back sofa. Its retro shape with its modern uptake though, strangely, promotes a sense of proximity and togetherness despite its formal, and austere vibe especially when viewed from afar. Personally, I still prefer more casual vibes, but I can’t ignore its impact in a room. In any case, I have put together a collection of imagery portraying the very best of these five sofa trends that will surely help you decide for yourself what you prefer best…;) (And if you need a simple guide and tips for buying the right sofa, then read here).
