Visiting an art exhibition is like a little treat. If that exhibition happens to be really good, then it’s a big treat. In any case, there are plenty of them going on all over the world. Therefore, I hand picked four art exhibitions to put on the spotlight for they seem interesting and intriguing. I think they’re quite worthwhile and if any of you should visit them, I would be delighted if you gave me some feedback on them. One of them takes place in NYC, two of them in London and one in Athens, Greece…so take your pick! 🙂

Toward a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948–1980

This exhibition highlights a body of modernist architecture by introducing the work of Yugoslavia’s leading architects under a socialist regime, to an international audience. More than 400 drawings, photographs, models and film reels unveil the work of architects like Bogdan Bogdanovic, Juraj Neidhardt, Svetlana Kana Radevic, Edvard Ravnikar, Vjenceslav Richter, and Milica Steric, including notable examples of Brutalism.

Michael Jackson: On the Wall at National Portrait Gallery

This exhibition showcases works from at least 40 artists, including Andy Warhol that portray Michael Jackson. The concept is to examine how this pop music icon influenced generations of contemporary artists. Advanced booking is highly recommended.

Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Room : The Moving Moment When I Went to the Universe
at Victoria Miro gallery on Wharf Road
October 3rd – December 21st
Although free timed tickets may not be readily available, it might be worth checking if something does comes up. The exhibition features new paintings of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and includes works from the iconic My Eternal Soul series. Three painted bronze pumpkin sculptures, her signature motif are also exhibited along with flower sculptures. But I think a large-scale Infinity Mirrored Room is what appeals to most people from this exhibition. It is an Instagram-friendly installation – where you can remind yourself that sometimes art can be just for fun, or not?

John Valyrakis at Ikastikos Kiklos Sianti
October 18th – November 10th
This personal art exhibition is called “Anamesa” (in-between). I came across it while browsing various calendar events and it captivated me. The incredible use of colors, its fun and up-beat approach of portraits of people caught in-between moments while in a constant dynamic motion that is easy to relate to, is simply fascinating. For all we know, it could be any of us going through those very emotions that define us as humans – separation, loneliness, companionship, the need to be together and at the same time apart. Hence, I urge you to watch this short video of the artist at work on his favorite subject matter – portraits. And if you happen to in Athens, then don’t miss this! You will love its energy…
