The Rising Interior Decorating Trend :: Patterns

Hi there! What are the news in the design world nowadays? Plenty! But let me start off with one of the latest decorating trends, that’s rising to a new climax. Looking over at the images from the latest rug and flooring exhibition Domotex in Germany (that took place just over 10 days ago), I think it’s safe enough to say that pattern was a recurring theme. So let’s have a closer look at the patterns decorating trend.

Now pattern, happens to be one of the seven elements in interior design and as such, it must never be overlooked or underestimated. All the more lately, it seems like it’s gaining in popularity with the crowds (including me). Why, now? Basically, pattern balances the trending moody interiors. It works alongside colors and adds interest and a story into a space. Therefore, it makes sense to fuel up with some inspiration and see how wonderfully it can be introduced in any home, because my guess is that pattern will take over both floors and walls… 😉

Pattern flooring techniques (i.e. herringbone or tesselation) have long since been used as an effective and stylish way to add interest onto a large surface area, with a hint of retro nostalgia. Similarly, wallpapers have been doing the same for a long, long time. The benefits of pattern, lie in its ability to create smooth transitions and continuities. Don’t have such a floor or wall yet? Easy, peasy…area rugs and wall coverings with pattern are probably the easiest ways to introduce this element in a space in strong dosages.

So where’s the catch? Geometry! I don’t mean the mathematics lesson that most of us dreaded. The latest patterns decorating trend in living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, you name it, is all about geometric shapes and lines that make repetitive patterns and fuse into our decor. Too bold for you? Then subtle injections of geometrical pattern in soft textiles, upholstery fabrics can also do the trick. The outcome will be softer, but with an edge to it.

In any case though, to create a cohesive design statement, the element of pattern as a theme should be carried all throughout the house in various dosages without getting overwhelmed.

Geometric patterns in soft textiles combined with and in juxtaposition to solid blocks of deep, saturated colors is like a clash between boho and French urban chic…And yes, that’s one clash I’m totally signing up for. It’s going to be bold, fresh, edgy and somewhat out of my comfort zone, but why not?!
